Compassion for Critters
Our Compassion for Critters humane education program reaches hundreds of children in Santa Barbara each year — many of whom come from low to moderate income families — through reading, storytelling and interaction with well-behaved dogs and other animals.
Our program builds on children’s natural curiosity toward animals and helps them create safe and satisfying relationships with our kindred spirits that will last a lifetime. Our humane educators primarily work with preschool, kindergarten and first and second grade students. Each presentation lasts between 45-60 minutes, depending upon the age group.
Through the generosity of individuals, businesses and foundations, we are able to provide our program at NO cost to schools! To schedule a school visit, please contact Karen at firstname.lastname@example.org.
“For the last two years, the children at Storyteller Children’s Center have had the privilege of several visits from Karen and her canine friend, Sandy. Many of the children at Storyteller live in shelters or in crowded or substandard housing so they have had limited or no exposure to pets. AFA’s humane education program introduces them to well-behaved animals, both in person and through books. Even the most shy or fearful child has found the courage to pet Sandy! This not only helps foster a life-long love of animals, but builds the self-esteem and confidence of each child. And for that, we are very grateful!” — Terri Allison, Executive Director, Storyteller Children’s Center
